From Election to Sideways and The Descendants, director Alexander Payne admits, “To a certain degree, I've been trying to make ‘70s movies my whole career.” But with The Holdovers, he “tried to take it one step further.” Following a disliked boarding school teacher (Paul Giamatti) forced to look after a troubled student (Dominic Sessa) over Christmas break, the pic's blend of comedy and drama seems right out of the “Me” decade.
