SPECIAL FEATURE BMW DIESELS The diesel car market in 1982 was not what you would call inspiring. In fact it was mainly a collection of dreadful rattlers that might just about pull you out of bed, but we'll go through the sorry list alphabetically. Alfa Romeo had a diesel Alfetta from 1979 powered by a four-cylinder 2-litre VM Motori oil burner – 82bhp at the spare wheel and a big, heavy old lump that really demanded the power steering it never got. Audi had the 100 Diesel with a 69bhp 2.1-diesel, and a turbo version that would appear with the new C3 model for the 1983 model year, but even with the boost it would sport only 86bhp. Citroën fielded a CX diesel with a 74bhp four-banger, Ford a 2.5-litre…
