ROBIN FLETCHER TRANSIT

Like most children in the 1970s, I did my fair share of school minibus trips. These were usually Bedfords, Sherpas and the like, but in 1978 a PTA fundraiser at my junior school saw us take delivery of a secondhand Ford Transit Mk1 with an exotic dual-wheel rear axle. I don’t think our school did anything that heavy duty to need so much extra rubber, but our white Transit certainly looked the part. And I enjoyed a mid-summer holiday journey in it that year as a squeaky-voiced member of a junior choir hired to fill in for a week while Winchester Cathedral’s far superior singers went on tour.
