The United States of America produced outstanding and memorable automobiles during the 1950s. Fuelled by a booming economy, car manufacturers battled to capture the attention of potential customers, leading to a host of brand-new models being launched by major brands every year. Many of these cars featured interesting — if not daring — styling, leading to vehicles such as the period’s Cadillacs, complete with outrageous tailfins. The 1950s will also be remembered for the introduction of a then-groundbreaking composite put to good use in the automotive world: fibreglass. The Chevrolet Corvette holds the distinction of being the first mass-produced all-fibreglass-bodied car, which began rolling off assembly lines in 1953.
