It isn’t a stretch to say the SC was Porsche’s first attempt at creating a 911 for automotive enthusiasts outside the company’s typical customer base. Despite the resulting model being down on power when compared to the outgoing Carrera 3.0 (a model subject to low-volume production), the initiative proved a roaring success and added a significant amount of much needed cash to Porsche’s bank balance. Evolutionary changes to model specification would occur in the five years of SC production leading to the arrival of the Carrera 3.2, but the overriding message was clear: the 911 not only had the ability to hold its own in dealer showrooms when pitched against the manufacturer’s more modern transaxle range of products, it had the potential to remain Zuffenhausen’s flagship long into the future.…
