HOW TO BUY USED BRAKE PARTS Buying used brake parts is tricky, and generally only worth doing if you’re having them reconditioned. It’s not worth it financially, either — you can usually buy reconditioned callipers for less than the cost of buying them and paying to have them rebuilt. However, if you are buying callipers to have them reconditioned, check that the mounting lugs aren’t broken off or the casings are cracked, if they are, they’re scrap. Second-hand drums and backplates are usually a safe bet, and they’re pretty easy to check for cracks and missing components, though expect to have to replace the cylinders.
