V is for… Vernier pulleys

Vernier pulleys are one a way of accurately setting the camshaft timing on your engine. Camshaft timing can be just as important as camshaft selection, as a good camshaft will be wasted if you don’t get it right. All camshaft manufacturers will specify a particular setting for their cam kits and this is the figure that will give optimum performance on a perfect engine. This is how the engine should be set up for initial testing. On a standard engine the camshaft pulley (or sprocket) will be fixed to the end of the camshaft by a set of bolts and a keyway or Woodruff key. This secures the pulley in a fixed position.
