THE OLD EAST END

The East End as it once was! This is the junction of Whitechapel High Street and Commercial Road, taken on March 14 1963. At the time it was known, for obvious reasons, as Gardiner’s Corner, and until it burnt down in 1972, the department store specialised in Scottish and military wear. In fact for many years the sign on the front described it as ‘The Scotch Shop’ though by 1963, and presumably in order to appeal to a younger market, the sign was instead proclaiming the brands of jeans being stocked. Anyway, there’s lots of commercial vehicle interest here, starting with the Belling & Lee (“aerials and electronic components”) Karrier one-ton van which is being stopped from crossing the junction by a Bedford TK tractor and flat semi-trailer.
