Though no genuine ex-Wyatt Transport lorries are thought to remain, that didn’t stop Max Williams from carrying out a ‘restore-creation’ of a lorry his Dad drove and which he rode in as a boy. Peter Simpson tells the story.

Like so many enthusiasts, 40-year-old Max Williams’ involvement in lorry preservation was inspired by his father Geoff, and a wish to recreate a few childhood travelling in the cab experiences. Now aged 75, retired driver Gareth Williams spent much of his working life driving for Essex-based Wyatt’s Transport. From their base in Danbury, he drove all over Britain, including overnights in the sleeper cab, during long runs to collect packaging materials for the mushroom farms which were around Basildon at the time. However, Gareth also did a lot of day-work, and on this he was often joined in the cab by family members. Max met Geoff Wyatt on “a couple of occasions” on returning to the yard after a day out with Dad, and remembers being given 50p to buy…
