CAFÉ COB

Mike Neale calls in for a cuppa and look-around at a rather unusual midlands café.

The Rootes Group introduced the 7ft. wheelbase Commer Cob 5cwt van in 1956,. The Cob shared its body with the Hillman Husky estate car which had been launched in 1954, derived from the Raymond Loewy designed MkVIII Minx. In 1957, the Cob, Husky and Express were redesigned, the front end now matching the Audax type Hillman Minx Series II. The new Husky and Cob Series I thus looked quite different to the earlier MkI versions. The1390ccOHVengine finally made its way into all three (the previous incarnation having retained sidevalve power), developing 43bhp at 4000rpm. They had a four speed gearbox with a floor mounted gearlever, with synchromesh on the top three speeds. The payload of the Series I Cob was 7cwt with a 2in. longer wheelbase than the MkI. The…
