Welcome to another issue of Choosing A School For Your Child magazine. As editor, I had the chance to speak to many schools about the innovative approaches of staff, students and parents in 2020, during and after the COVID-19 lockdown. Take a look at our feature, learning in lockdown (from page 32), to see the various changes that schools made, often very quickly, to adapt to new ways of learning. The choice within the NSW public school system has greatly increased in recent years. Your child is automatically entitled to a place in their local high school, but you can also apply for a place at non-local high schools, such as single-gender, specialist, selective, sports or agricultural high schools. You can potentially take advantage of increased specialisation in the public education system. Some restrictions do apply. Students from outside a school’s designated local enrolment area can be offered a place only if space permits after local students have been accommodated. Today’s Higher School Certificate (HSC) offers more than 110 courses, including a range of nationally accredited Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses. Depending on the subject choice, NSW students can graduate with a Higher School Certificate, a nationally recognised VET qualification, credit transfer into TAFE NSW courses and/or an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR). Arden Anglican School in Beecroft and Epping celebrated the end of the 2020 school year through a series of four livestreamed events from the newly opened Creative Arts Centre. Parents were able to access the live stream through the school’s intranet, from their homes, offices or even the local cafe. When Meriden’s 2021 prefects buried a time capsule that immortalised life in 2020, staff and students reflected on how grateful they felt to have been members of the Meriden community during such a tumultuous year. One of the items buried in the time capsule, which is to be opened in 100 years’ time, was a Meriden face mask, the most recent, and unexpected, addition to the school uniform but one that is likely to be here to stay. At the beginning of the COVID-19 shutdown, Barker College’s head of curriculum, Jeremy von Einem, openly communicated to the school community about the college’s initial trial of remote learning and the flaws that were revealed, indicating that they would never be able to replicate the students’ on-campus timetable in a home environment. “A student isn’t physically writing and working for 60 minutes in each hour of every lesson,” he explains. “Sometimes they daydream, sometimes they just listen, sometimes they get distracted. Fresh on the heels of the catastrophic summer season of bushfires, the pandemic of COVID-19 changed our world instantly and dramatically. Today, new words fill our vernacular — self-isolation, lockdown, social distancing, sanitiser and webinars. Late in Term 1, 2020, COVID-19 forced the cessation of student and staff attendance at school for a then unknown period of time. Accordingly, with very vigorous and splendid work by a number of key staff, we rolled out remote learning. This required training of staff and students in order for them to learn how best to utilise our systems. During the ensuing weeks of remote learning, the school absorbed many lessons.
