GRINDROD saw good earnings growth in the six months to June 30 off the back of strong mineral commodity markets, good growth in volumes through Maputo port and favourable net interest margins at Grindrod Bank. DEPUTY President David Mabuza has warned that South Africa’s municipali- ties continued to owe Eskom billions of rand in outstanding debt, crippling the struggling power utility’s financial position further. Mabuza yesterday told Parliament that the total debt owed to Eskom by various municipalities had ballooned by nearly R5 billion in just four months up to July. “Debt owed by municipalities to Eskom remains a major challenge to the entity’s financial stability,” Mabuza said. “Debt owed by municipalities by Eskom has since grown from R44.8 billion to R49.1bn between March and July 2022. CURRO Holdings, the independent school provider, grew its average learner numbers by 7 percent to 70 519 learners in the six months to June 30, while revenue increased by 15 percent to R2.06 billion. Earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (Ebitda) increased by 20 percent to R467 million. “The group recorded pleasing increases in learners, revenue, profitability and cash generated during the first half,” chief executive Andries Greyling said. THE RAND has continued on its slide amid a strengthening dollar after disappointing economic data from major economies reinforced global recession fears. THE DA has demoted its chief whip in the National Assembly, Natasha Mazzone, and replaced her with her deputy, Siviwe Gwarube. Gwarube, who became an MP in 2019, was health shadow minister until February this year. She was announced as the party’s national spokesperson in November 2020. Gwarube was elected as the deputy chief whip in the mid-term caucus election in December 2021, taking over from Jacques Julius. KABUL: A blast that tore through a Kabul mosque during evening prayers on Wednesday killed 21 people, Kabul police said yesterday. A police spokesperson said 33 people had been injured in the blast. Sri Lanka police disperse protesters

Colombo: Sri Lanka police fired tear gas and water cannon on a small protest yesterday to break up the first demonstration since the crisis-hit island nation lifted a state of emergency. An unprecedented economic collapse has sparked often huge anti-government rallies this year. The government had imposed a state of emergency, but the ordinance lapsed overnight. Several hundred students attempted to march to the city centre in Colombo for a rally outside the railway station before they were blocked and dispersed by officers armed with batons and riot shields. Rebel leader returns to Chad for talks

N’DJAMENA: One of Chad’s most prominent rebel leaders, Timan Erdimi, returned home yesterday after 17 years in exile to participate in national talks to pave the way to elections after a military coup. More than 30 rebel and opposition factions signed a peace pact with Chad’s transitional authorities last week, agreeing to join broader talks to begin tomorrow. The most powerful insurgent group, however, refused to participate. Erdimi, the nephew of former president Idriss Deby, left Chad in 2005 to lead an insurgency against his uncle’s government. 3 dead as violent storm hits Corsica

PARIS: Three people, including a teenage girl, died along Corsica’s coast and two others were critically injured yesterday, as a violent storm battered the Mediterranean island with hurricane-force winds. Hail, heavy rain and winds measured as peaking at 224km/h swept across the French island. In southern Corsica, a 13-year-old girl died when a tree fell on another campsite and a 72-year-old woman was killed when her car was struck by a beach hut roof, authorities said. The third victim, a 46-year-old Frenchman, died when a tree fell on a campsite bungalow in the north, authorities said. On France’s mainland, 1 000 households were without power. | Reuters…

Bodies found in auctioned suitcases

Wellington: The remains of two children have been found in two suitcases bought at auction in New Zealand, local police said yesterday, vowing to track down those responsible for the deaths. Police said the bodies were likely to have been in storage for several years, and the victims are thought to have been between five and 10 years old when they died. The children were concealed in suitcases of similar size, he said. The remains were only found when an unsuspecting family bought a trailer-load of items being auctioned off in bulk from a storage unit in South Auckland.
