THERE was a time, not so long ago, when social media was, as the name suggests, largely social and innocent. But there has been an ever-increasing growth, particularly on Twitter, in communications that at best could be labelled nasty and malicious, and much of which is orchestrated.
Bots, trolls, fake news and people making impulsive comments on almost anything are an increasing trend. More disturbingly, both abroad and here in South Africa, people are being targeted, cyber-bullied and “cancelled” for saying something the targeters take issue with.
