Abdool Karim now contributing through WHO Science Council
Nicola Daniels nicola.daniels@inl.co.za AMID new technology and scientific breakthroughs to fight diseases, in his role as part of the nine-member Science Council of the World Health Organization (WHO), South African infectious disease epidemiologist Professor Salim Abdool Karim said making these innovations accessible to the developing world was a big part of the council’s mission. Chaired by Nobel Laureate Dr Harold Varmus, the council was inaugurated on Monday and held its first meeting on Tuesday. Karim said he had been appointed for a three-year term and the council would meet four times a year. It has been established to provide scientific advice to respond to health problems such as global health threats; interpret the latest scientific and medical knowledge; and identify the latest advances in technology to improve health globally.
