IN a recent podcast interview with “wide awake” Josh Rubin, Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis made a startling admission: he doesn’t believe homelessness can ever be fully resolved and that the city lacks a genuine plan to tackle the issue.
This revelation confirms what many of us have suspected about the Mayor’s approach to homelessness: it’s largely superficial and ineffective.
Given this acknowledgment, one must ask: why does the City of Cape Town continue to squander hundreds of millions of rands of taxpayers’ money on initiatives that they know won’t solve homelessness?
Is it merely about managing the problem rather than addressing it? If so, how does the Mayor assess the success of this management strategy, and who exactly is benefiting from it?
