As someone who has spent most of her life dedicated to understanding our natural world and sharing that knowledge with the public, marine biologist Melanie Knight, not surprisingly, fell in love with oceanside running. Runners turn to seaside paths and trails for a variety of reasons (an escape from city traffic and a reprieve from training on unforgiving concrete are just a couple), but, as Knight would attest, there’s perhaps no better rationale than reconnecting with nature. Her job as program manager with the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority-led ECHO program involves managing a regional collaborative initiative to reduce underwater noise from ships, which impacts at-risk whale populations.
