This Alberta club welcomes trail runners of all abilities, from back-of-the-packers to podium finishers

Calgary Trail Runners are a formidable, but friendly, group; of the 800 or so official members, only “a few hundred” come out regularly, according to organizer Tony Gordon, who took over leading the Tuesday night runs in Bragg Creek about 10 years ago. Allyson Johnson, a clinical nutritionist who coaches cross-country skiing in winter, has been with CTR since the early days. Back then, she says, “We ganged together, so we wouldn’t get lost.” The group has attracted more competitive runners over the years, but many members just run trails for enjoyment, year-round. Johnson loves the “family” atmosphere of the club, whose members show up at races throughout the province and beyond, both to race and to volunteer. “You kind of become family and friends for life,” she says of the trail…
