The Clarendon Way

This scenic, 39-km run from Salisbury to Winchester (or the reverse) is relatively non-technical and can easily be scheduled as part of a U.K. holiday—or participate in the annual race in early October

For some, it’s a pilgrimage; for others, it’s a challenging off-road marathon held every October. For me, on my vacations from Canada, it’s a chance to run unimpeded amid the pastoral landscapes and quaint English villages of my youth and reconnect with my native country. The Clarendon Way is a designated National Trail that links 800-year-old Salisbury Cathedral with Winchester Cathedral. Undulating across the gentle chalk downs of Wiltshire and Hampshire in southern England, it’s a bucolic mix of country lanes, vehicle-wide farm tracks, ancient Roman roads and narrow footpaths. The challenge for runners is less the terrain and more the wealth of distractions en route.
