Many Canadian athletes with Olympic or Paralympic aspirations work regular jobs to support themselves while training. Add decisions around starting and growing families to the mix, and the financial challenges become even more daunting. In 2024, a group of female athletes took bold steps toward changing this with the creation of MOMentum, a not-for-profit that provides financial support for athlete moms and aspiring moms headed to a major Games. MOMentum’s founders, who include retired 800m Olympian and Canadian record holder Melissa Bishop-Nriagu, met while serving on the parental and pregnancy committee of AthletesCAN, an independent organization of national team athletes. They applied for, and received, an OLY Canada Legacy Grant of $10,000, and in 2024 disbursed most of the money ($1,000 each) among seven athlete moms who were training for the…
