I WANTED TO SEE HOW FAR I COULD GO Kate Beirness’s achievements as an athlete and broadcaster have been powered by a fusion of passion and talent—except, perhaps, when it comes to running. Her earliest strides in that department may have had more to do with stubbornness. “I think the biggest problem I had with running was that I was terrible at it,” the award-winning TSN on-air personality recalls of childhood races in her hometown of Port Perry, Ont. “You can ask my mother—my goal as a cross-country runner was simply not to place last. I was never naturally a runner, by any stretch of the imagination.
