Winter running injuries can be serious, but you can minimize your risk with some advance preparation

With the onset of winter, running takes a bit more preparation before you get out the door. Away go the shorts and singlets, to be replaced with tights, neck warmers, gloves and hats. And while fighting the cold is a critical consideration, runners also need to be prepared for the possibility of winter running injuries. Experienced runners know to watch out for ice and snow, but the risks of winter running go well beyond slipping and falling. A Northern Michigan University study found the injury rate for musculoskeletal injuries was higher in winter months than summer, and the cold, icy and hard surfaces likely account for those differences.
