“This is REALLY HARD.” I took a breath. Pressed send. Waited for the message to say it was delivered. I’d never texted during a race before, but now I cradled my phone like a lifeline to my support crew. Shivering under an emergency blanket on an army green cot, my muscles aching, I was 116 km into one of the world’s toughest ultramarathons—the Diagonale des Fous—and still had another 50 km to go.
