My first attempt at a trail ultra was at the Golden Ultra in September 2016, and it resulted in a DNF. It was the 65-km run on the second day of the three-day stage race in Golden, B.C. That day I learned what race sweeps were, how severely undertrained I was for mountain ultras and that flat Coke is the elixir of life. I don’t remember feeling sad when I was told I couldn’t continue—I just looked forward to getting back to my room and not moving for a few days. One year later, I returned to Golden and finished every stage with a big smile.
