WHERE IS IT? In Oostelijke Eilanden, Amsterdam's Eastern Docklands area. It's a three-minute walk from Rietlandpark tram stop, which takes you to Centraal Station in just ten minutes. You can then hop on the Eurostar or get the train to Schiphol Airport.
Head to the banks of the IJ waterway for a breezy walk past warehouses and don't miss the Wes Anderson-esque Hoxton Lloyd jetty.

WHAT'S IT LIKE? Striking, featuring bold Lloyd signage on the facade, while inside it has a boarding-house feel with public spaces running off a main corridor. You can somewhat see how it used to be a prison, though AIME Studios and local firm Nicemakers have made it far more homely - greenery and colourful artwork soften the original brickwork and timber panelling. Further historic features include stained glass windows in the stairwell, which is worth a climb.
The entrance hall is a few steps up from the road, with a photo booth inside. An additional few steps lead to doors for the hotel corridor - this would prove difficult if you have accessibility needs or luggage but I'm told there is an alternative entrance.
The check-in area is small so can get congested, but there's a lounge across the corridor for overspill - plus a box to drop off your key if you're in a rush. Guests have the option of flexible check-in and check-out, if requested 72 hours in advance. As with other Hoxton properties, there are items for purchase behind the counter.
ROOMS The hotel's 136 rooms come in categories from Cosy (14-17 sqm) to Roomy (22-30 sqm), Biggy (30-50 sqm) with the added option of bunk beds or two double beds, and Studio with a king bed and sofa bed (50-53 sqm). There are also rooms with quirky features - from a grand piano to a five-person bed.
The ordinary categories are minimalist, featuring open wardrobes, geometric patterns and tiled bathrooms with a rain shower. Amenities include fast wifi, a phone with free international calls, complimentary cartons of water and milk, teabags and coffee bags, a kettle, large-size Blank toiletries, a hairdryer, Roberts Radio and a breakfast bag that you can hang on your door for a quick bite (€5).
