Jaw-dropping technology

AUSTRIAN AIRLINES, EVA AIR and All Nippon Airways (ANA) have joined SWISS in adopting Lufthansa Technik's AeroShark surface technology, designed to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The technology involves applying a film to aircraft fuselages and engine nacelles, which has micrometres-deep ‘riblets’ aligned to the direction of airflow, replicating the hydrodynamic properties of a shark's skin to reduce air resistance in flight. Austrian said that the technology would be applied to four of its six Boeing 777-200ER aircraft by March 2025. Taiwanese carrier EVA Air will apply the AeroShark technology to its entire fleet of nine Boeing 777F freighters, with the first aircraft expected to re-enter commercial service next month, while All Nippon Airways (ANA) has equipped a Boeing 777 for cargo operations with the technology, with plans to extend this…
