I began writing The Rooming House on a camper van odyssey through a remote part of Australia in 2009. No matter where we pulled in for the night, there was an internet connection. Everyone we knew, wherever they were in the world, could be contacted. How different this was from even the recent past, I reflected.
Returning to live in Vancouver, I watched young people come out of university and cast about for meaningful careers, struggle to find affordable housing, and protest for social justice and climate action. How similar this was to my own youth in the ’70s, I reflected.
