A day with… MARK LORD HEAD BEADLE, BURLINGTON ARCADE

Mark Lord has been part of the oldest and smallest police force in Britain for 22 years, looking after the historic London shopping thoroughfare, Burlington Arcade

BRITAIN: What’s the history of the Burlington Beadles? Mark Lord: Burlington Arcade opened to the public on 20 March 1819: the world’s first modern shopping mall. At that time there was no recognised police force in London, or anywhere in the country, so there was a lot of antisocial behaviour, street crime, drunkenness and pickpocketing. Even Bond Street, which is now the most expensive shopping street in the country, was full of ‘gentlemen’s clubs’ (a polite way of putting it). Lady Cavendish, who lived next door in Burlington House (which is now the Royal Academy), complained to her husband that there was nowhere pleasant for her to shop, and he listened – as a good husband always should!
