On 30 November 1874 a grand ball was being held at Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire. Among the staying guests was a heavily pregnant Lady Randolph Spencer-Churchill, who suddenly went into labour – brought on, perhaps, by dancing or a bumpy carriage ride a few days earlier. A small room set aside for guests’ coats was swiftly cleared and Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill was born with premature haste. The 150th anniversary of Winston’s birth is being marked around the country, highlighting the life of an extraordinary leader whose accession as Britain’s Prime Minister from 1940 altered both the course of the Second World War and our history.
