Follow the route taken by Queen Elizabeth I on her West Country ‘progress’ to discover magnificent houses and heritage cities

During her reign, Queen Elizabeth I liked to leave her London palaces for a summer tour of the provinces, when she stayed at the grand country estates of her monied and titled subjects. This year marks 450 years since the queen’s ‘progress’ to the West Country, so what better time to follow the route taken by the queen through rolling Wiltshire countryside, visiting fine stately homes and heritage cities? Thankfully, what was then a summer-long sojourn by horse and carriage is an easy weekend jaunt today. Elizabeth I enjoyed the trips around her kingdom hugely, but those that had the honour of hosting her, not so much: having the sovereign to stay was hard work. She travelled with a huge entourage – from government ministers and advisors to brewers, musicians…
