Indeed while the brooding West Yorkshire moors get the most air-time when it comes to the Brontë sisters’ inspiration, there is another aspect of their creative energy that is often overlooked. For every breath of fresh, peaceful air they enjoyed on countryside walks, there were several taken in the small but rapidly expanding and comparatively polluted settlements of Haworth in West Yorkshire – where they lived for most of their lives – and the village of Thornton in the outskirts of Bradford, where they were born.
