In her column this issue (p.31), Heather Booth writes about the catch-22 that library workers who are also parents face, especially in an environment that’s growing increasingly volatile. As a youth services librarian, she explains, she’s been asked many times if she herself is a parent, especially by those wishing to discuss banned or challenged books. She says she’s learned that her answer doesn’t matter—you’ll never be a parent to someone else’s kids. “Community members will make their own decisions about their own children’s interactions with libraries,” she says. “That is their role.”
With ongoing fights over book banning and curriculum, community spaces—libraries, schools—have emerged as battlegrounds. While some of these fights are undertaken with the best of intention, others become rapidly blown out…
