FOR THE LOVE OF Mom

In honor of Mother’s Day, readers reflect on plants with special meaning.

These tulips were my mother’s favorite. When she downsized and moved in 1983, she took the bulbs with her. And when she passed away, I planted them in my garden. A few years later a single striped bloom emerged. Tulip plants are typically not long-lived, but this bloom has returned for 24 years. Every spring it reminds me of my mother.
