ID TIP! Though not a hard and fast rule, Mute Swans tend to be much tamer than the usually wary Whooper and Bewick's Swans BIRD 1 “Hold on a cotton-picking second, you said this was all about swans and their ilk, and this is a small, fluffy, brown waterbird. Look beyond the little brown waterbird (which is a Little Grebe) and you will see a reflection of a swan's head and neck, upside-down of course, and somewhat rippled (blame the grebe). Using the grebe for scale, this is a massive bird, its head being roughly Dabchick-sized! The bill is pinky-orange, and crucially, the lores (the area between the eye and the bill) are black.
