Want to know what inspired a classic of nature writing? Head for Chelmsford, writes Matt Merritt

Most of us, I'd guess, have at least one or two books that have had a huge impact on our birdwatching lives, whether in inspiring us to take up the hobby in the first place, or in helping us master at least a few of its intricacies. I can think of two in my own case. One was the Reader's Digest Field Guide to the Birds of Britain, which my parents bought when I was young. It wasn't just the beautiful illustrations, but the fact that the species’ accounts provided not only practical ID help, but also dipped into folklore and history and culture.
