Survey continues to shed light on heronries

As many birdwatchers know, Grey Herons are among the earliest birds to start nesting, often gathering at colonies, tending to nests, and even occasionally laying eggs as early as February. With a UK population currently showing signs of a slow decline, it is important that we continue to monitor heronries in order to chart the changes in these familiar birds’ fortunes. In the early 2000s, the number of nests was estimated to be in the region of 13,000 but following severe winters in 2008/09 and 2010/11 we saw a notable drop in numbers. BTO scientists have since noticed a slower than expected recovery, and the current population stands at fewer than 10,000 pairs.
