Det vakte stor mystik, da Hollywood-stjernen Gene Hackman og hans hustru, pianisten Betsy Arakawa, blev fundet døde i deres hjem i Santa Fe, New Mexico, den 26. februar sammen med en af deres hunde. Den 95-årige skuespiller blev fundet livløs nær køkkenet, mens hans 63-årige hustru lå på badeværelset omgivet af piller, der lå spredt på gulvet. Politiet var hurtige til at melde ud, at der ikke lå en kriminel handling bag. Nu er den endelige dødsårsag fundet. Ifølge retsmedicinere døde Betsy Arakawa af hantavirus – en sjælden virus, der spredes gennem kontakt med inficerede gnavere. Hantavirus kan give symptomer, der minder om influenza, og i alvorlige tilfælde kan det udvikle sig til Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, der er en livstruende lungesygdom.
