Dakar: the world’s toughest bike race...

… starts on 6 January. This is what to look out for

The 41st edition of the world’s toughest motorcycle race starts on 6 January in Lima, and returns to the Peruvian capital on the 17th, without leaving the country. Riders will clock-up almost 5000km, of which 3000km are special (raced) stages with 2000km of liaison (timed but not raced daily sections). With just ten race days the rally might look less adventurous this year, but the stages will be around 70 per cent sand, leading to high speeds and big crashes.
