Never mind being plugged in next to the toaster and making almost no sound. With no clutch, no gears, and peak torque from zero revs, what we want to know is what electric bikes really deliver. Dyno and test strip, here we come…

New bikes versus our dyno, scales and datalogger ON THE DYNO Battery bikes are a pig to dyno, so left axis is power as normal, but it's road speed on the bottom, not revs (but as there are no gears, it's effectively the same thing). Note how peak power is at useful road speed, and how it goes flat up top. AT THE PROVING GROUND 0-60MPH 3.4s Perky. With no gears to faff around with and huge torque from rest, the Zero nips to 60 with respectable briskness. 1/4 MILE 12.3s Standing quarter half a sec slower than Honda's steady NT1100. It's because power drops off with speed; see graph. 70-0 MPH 58.7m Ah. This is at least four or five metres further than being respectable.
