TURNING CHAINS

Use these to bring the hook up to the height of the next row

After each row of half treble, you need to turn your fabric and work the turning chain (2 chains for half treble). The picture (right) shows this done and ready to continue. In crochet, you need to make a t-ch at the start of every row to bring the hook up to the working height for the next row. You usually make the t-ch at the start of the new row, but it was traditionally worked at the end of the row, hence its name. Different stitches need a different length of t-ch (see page 46 for more detail on turning chains). In half treble fabric, you usually count the t-ch as the first stitch of the new row (unless the pattern states otherwise). The numbers on the image (right) show where…
