My big brother was obsessed with dinosaurs when we were small, and he taught me all about them: Triceratops’ horny head; ‘steggers’, with those plates and spiked tail; and of course, old short-arms himself, T. rex. So when my son began his dinosaur obsession I felt pretty sure this was my time to shine as a cool dad who knew his dinos. But it soon became apparent that I was as behind the times on this front as on most others. As we read books and watched TV shows, I found that, during the intervening decades, our understanding of life on prehistoric Earth had come a long way.
