Clichés. They “should be avoided”, says the Haymarket style guide mischievously, “like the plague”. Arf. Very good. And they should. Particularly my least favourite of all: “A bad workman blames his tools.” Now, I’m not pretending that there has never been an element of truth to this; the first person to say it probably sounded quite clever. But there are times when it isn’t clever. The 20th time an acquaintance has asked why that classic car you own is still sitting, broken, for example. Let’s say you explain that, yes, progress is a bit slow because the garage is 50 metres away from the house, in a block without power, and that because there is also a barbecue and four bicycles in front of the car, you’re working only when…
