FIRST DRIVE Flagship’s facelift brings styling tweaks inside and out, tuned suspension and fresh tech

STILL in only its second generation, two decades on from the original model’s launch, the XC90 has become something of an institution for Volvo. As the brand’s flagship (at least on the combustion-engined side, now that the EX90 EV has arrived), its seven-seat practicality, refinement, build quality and, above all, safety help give it a different appeal to the likes of its BMW X5, Audi Q7 and Mercedes GLE competitors. This year marks the most significant update for the second-generation XC90 since its arrival in 2015. Volvo likes to drip-feed tweaks to its models rather than give them full-blown mid-life refreshes, so the sizeable changes to the exterior, plus revised suspension, a new interior and fresh technology feel quite drastic.
