FIRST DRIVE MG’s conservatively styled compact SUV delivers on most counts, but it lacks a bit of flair

THE MGS5 EV is a critical car for the resurgent brand here in the UK. It replaces the popular ZS EV, taking its place in the now crowded all-electric compact SUV class. But where MG’s affordable EV once usefully undercut many of its key rivals, this fast-moving segment now has many new challengers. The range kicks off at £28,495 with the SE Standard Range model, which offers a 49kWh battery pack and a 221-mile range. This seems impressive at face value, but new to the class are a range of aggressively priced rivals like the Citroen e-C3 Aircross that undercut it by a fair margin.
