Fact: Ferrari’s first plug-in hybrid sports car has an electric motor that’s more powerful than the V12s of the brand’s earliest road cars. The compact axial-flux e-motor in the 296 GTB has an output higher than the 2.0-litre V12 of the famed 166 racer from the late 1940s-early 1950s, for example. The e-motor of the 296 GTB produces 122kW, but it’s definitely the sidekick of the car’s double-act drivetrain. The star of the show is Ferrari’s first road car V6. (The company points out that the lovely 246 of the ‘70s wore a Dino badge, not the prancing horse). Codenamed F163, the new V6’s 120-degree angle is unusual; 60- or 90-degrees are the V6 norms.
