There’s no doubt that in the 30 years since the Australian New Car Assessment Programme (ANCAP) was established to independently crash test and rate new car safety, a consequence has been much improved crash protection and advanced safety technology.
ANCAP, and EuroNCAP, have in the past few years been moving towards much more complex testing regimes, with frequent updates, particularly to include rapidly developing driver assist safety tech such as automated emergency braking, lane keeping and adaptive cruise.
ANCAP ratings are valid only for six years, and with the recently updated, tougher test regime introduced in 2023, cars that were tested in 2017 or prior have now lost their old five star ratings.
