The return of the Adelaide 500 after a two-year absence is great news for race goers and party lovers alike. The street festival atmosphere has been finessed over two decades of Supercar meetings and Formula 1 before that. It is the gold standard other city street circuit events try to emulate but can’t quite crack. But Adelaide isn’t the first ’street race’ as such. If you ignore the outlier that is Western Australia and its round-the-houses race meetings that existed up until the 1960s, you can trace the origin to a northern Sydney suburb of Seaforth.
