Older readers may remember the Golden Stamp series of project books from their school days (or maybe not). These included illustrated stamps which could be pasted in where indicated. Automobile manufacturing was important enough to be included in the book called Australian Industries, published in 1978. There were then five corporations making cars in Australia: GM-H, Ford, Chrysler, Toyota and Nissan-Datsun. More than 88,000 people were employed at factories like the one shown, where Holden Kingswoods are seen coming down the line. “The motor vehicle industry faces many problems,” says the book. In 1978 those problems were air-pollution control, the rising price of petrol and the demand for safer cars.
