THERE WAS A TIME when four-strokes were well and truly looked down upon when it came to dirt bikes, especially if you intended to go racing. With the exception of Honda all the Japanese factories were making two-stroke dirtbikes and initially all their roadbikes were two-strokes as well, again except for Honda. The story is that Mr Honda hated two-strokes and declared that Honda would never produce one but some of the boffins in the R&D backroom had a private project going to develop a two-stroke motocrosser and it was already well advanced when the boss finally heard about it.
