MY FAIR LADY
Radical reinventions of classic musicals are all the rage these days, sometimes to great effect, other times to the detriment of the original. Thank goodness, then, for Bartlett Sher’s revival of My Fair Lady, which —a couple of clever tweaks aside — is a traditional retelling that serves up good old-fashioned musical theatre splendour on a huge canvas.
First staged at Lincoln Center in New York in 2018 with Six Feet Under’s Lauren Ambrose surprisingly good as cockney flower girl turned fit-for-society lady Eliza Doolittle, the production now stars Amara Okereke (Les Miserables, Spring Awakening) in her first lead role. It’s a star-making turn. Her comic timing is peerless, her yearning poignant, and when she sings ‘Wouldn’t it Be Loverly’ or ‘I Could Have Danced All Night’ she lights…
