“Pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it.”—Mary Oliver Passing cedars, spruce, maples, and towering Douglas fir trees, I descend the final steps of the forest path, cross over the sun-bleached driftwood logs, and step onto the beach. I inhale the salty air and exhale, feeling my body relax. I see bald eagles, ravens, herons, seals, sea lions, and, on lucky days, the misty breath of humpback or orca whales.
The water before me is called the Salish Sea. The land beneath my feet, and the forest behind me, is the traditional and unceded territory of the Komox First Nation. This is the place I love. This is the place in which I’m so grateful to live. This is where all my journaling begins.
